# Metres to yards converter for fabric

One metre is 1.0936133 yards, so to convert metres of fabric to yards you multiply by 1.0936133 — three metres is 3.28 yards. At a cutting counter that figure is not usable directly: US shops cut to the nearest eighth of a yard, so 3.28 yards is bought as 3⅜ yards. The converter below rounds up to eighths or quarters for that reason, and shows the exact decimal alongside, so you can see how much of the extra is rounding rather than fabric you asked for.

## The formula

```
yards = metres x 1.0936133
```

Exact by definition: the international yard has been exactly 0.9144 m since 1959.

Round the result UP to the nearest eighth of a yard, which is the standard US cut.

Converting the length alone is not enough if the roll widths differ: fabric sold by the
yard is commonly 44 in (112 cm) while fabric sold by the metre is commonly 140 cm.

## Common questions

### How many yards is a metre of fabric?

About 1.0936 yards, or 1 yard plus 3.37 inches. At a counter cutting to eighths you would buy 1⅛ yards to be sure of covering a full metre.

### Why does the result round up to eighths?

Because that is the smallest cut most US fabric counters make. Asking for 3.28 yards gets you 3⅜ — showing the decimal and the eighth side by side makes it clear which part of the total is rounding.

### My pattern is metric but my fabric is sold in yards. What else changes?

The roll width, almost always. Metric furnishing fabric is commonly 140 cm while imperial cotton is commonly 44 in (112 cm), so converting the length alone leaves you short. Use the fabric width converter to adjust for the width as well.
